Matthew Tucker

I have been interested in rallying from a very young age, and if I remember rightly there is a photo of me aged 2, sat in a pram, on a cold Wales Rally GB somewhere so it was apparent from this that my father always supported my rallying efforts.

I joined PTMC at the end of 2007, and have not looked back since. Having started out as the shy boy in the corner, I was soon initiated into marshalling the gate for the very last Red Dragon with Margaret Stoneman, however as I recollect I was soon hi jacked by her other half to help him with his duties. Since then I have been involved in marshalling with the club team and found that that’s where you get the bug for the sport.

Moving on from that, on my next club event I was moved to the ranks of stage set up crew and have been involved in every event we have run doing that job since 2008 for at least one day. Great fun is to be had with these guys and although it is hard slog the satisfaction and enjoyment well outweighs it. Most memorable for me however was epynt 2 years ago when Brent had to rush home for an emergency and I was promoted to sit in the chief marshal’s car with Colin Jenkins. Needless to say the Kia got a blast over the ranges.

After Marshalling for some time I decided that it was time to go further and in turn, started competing, organising and becoming competition secretary all at once. I firstly took over the role of running our club autotest’s to which I hope was enjoyable and defiantly allowed me to progress further in organising. From this I was also offered the opportunity to take over as comps secretary when Simon Anthony stepped down, which I happily took the role as so many I have looked up to have done in the past.

In 2009 i decided to take a step further and try to make a career for myself in motorsport, by enrolling for a BSc Degree in Motorsport Management at Swansea Metropolitan University. This has pushed my knowledge in the sport far further than i expected and has allowed me to do things such as be Safety Officer for the 2011 National Wales Rally GB, and Assistant Cheif Marshal on the 2012 Tour of Epynt. I am due to finish this course in July 2012.

My greatest joy now in 2012 is competing. Having built myself a Vauxhall Corsa road rally car I do compete as a driver on some nav scatters however I took like a duck to water with navigating in 2010, and planning to undertake a small class attack on the WAMC Asphalt Championship. Being given the opportunity to sit with Dai Lloyd in his 205 we managed 27th overall and 3rd in class in my first ever event the Neath Valley Stages. I have also sat with current WAMC Asphalt Championship contender, Wynne Watkins in his 2003 ex PWRC Subaru Impreza, although those in the know, will understand why my first time in a 4wd car didnt go so well. My more recent results have come with club member Dale Clatworthy in both his old Nissan Micra, and his current Toyota Corolla AE86, taking a class award on both times.

Also a small outing with multiple autotest winner, and autotest championship winner Huw Jones, on the Classic Tracks Road Rally brought some success. We managed to win the under 1400cc class in Huw's standard 1300cc Nissan Micra Road Car, on an event which is arguably known as one of the most hard going events in Wales.

I cannot stress enough how people my age are needed and influence the future of this sport and with that I believe that I am proof that we can be a part of the sport!
